Of note, sustained activation of one of the NOD-like receptors, namely, leucine-rich repeat and pyrin domain containing protein 3 (i.e., NLRP3 inflammasome), with exogenous or endogenous triggers, exacerbates a number of chronic inflammatory diseases (e.g., obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis) [74].
