High levels of iron generate several highly reactive hydroxyl radicals through the Fenton reaction (Nishizaki and Iwahashi, 2015), has a disruptive effect on lipids and proteins, and can trigger epilepsy and neuronal apoptosis by activating the calpain and caspase-3 pathways (Baudry and Bi, 2016). Here, CASP3 is linked to epilepsy.
