Joosten et al. (48) suggested that free fatty acids may contribute to induction of inflammation in gout by engaging Toll-like receptor 2 and acting synergistically with monosodium urate crystals to activate the apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a CARD (ASC)/caspase 1 pathway and induce the release of interleukin-1β.
