A near-infrared small molecule dye, IR-780, can target subunit A of succinate dehydrogenase in fibroblasts, and inhibit TGF-β1-induced elevation of succinate dehydrogenase and succinate, thereby preventing the formation of pulmonary fibrosis and respiratory dysfunction (Wang Z. et al., 2021). The gene discussed is TGFB1; the disease is pulmonary fibrosis.
