Preliminary observations suggest that this crosstalk may be impaired by the absence of surfactant protein C. The addition of surfactant protein C to cholesterol-containing lipid vesicles enhances the expression of cholesterol metabolism and transport genes (such as Pparg, SraI, Abca1, Abcg1, Lxrb and Srebp2) in alveolar macrophage cell lines (Ruwisch et al., 2020), which is a potential novel lipid-protein axis involved in lung remodeling in PF. Here, SFTPC is linked to pemphigus foliaceus.
