Low levels of red blood cells and hemoglobin (Hb) are mainly attributed to the insufficient effect of erythropoietin (EPO), resulting from reduced EPO production by kidney cells and decreased response to EPO, which is attributed to several factors (i.e., underlying inflammation, comorbid type 2 diabetes or cancer, and iron deficiency) [4, 5]. This evidence concerns the gene EPO and Iron deficiency anemia.
