Inspection of TF binding motifs corresponding to the DMPs shared between the two groups, separating the shared hypermethylated and hypomethylated CpG sets revealed IRF family transcription factors like IRF1, IRF2, IFR3, and IRF8 in the shared hypermethylated CpG set, which are well established regulators of the type I IFN system, being common in viral and bacterial infections [57]. This evidence concerns the gene IRF2 and bacterial infectious disease.
