SLC1A3 and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: If EAAT1 and EAAT2 transporter fail there will be an increase of glutamate levels in the synaptic cleft sufficient and enough to trigger the events that will lead to excitotoxicity (Gonçalves-Ribeiro et al., 2019), and this has been described in multiple neurological disorders, such as epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease (Van Laar et al., 2015), Alzheimer’s disease (Hynd et al., 2004), and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) (Van Den Bosch et al., 2006).
