Using antibodies against ApoE, it was observed that ApoE immunoreactivity was associated with amyloid deposits in AD and Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (17), as well as in other cerebral and systemic amyloid diseases (18, 19), suggesting a more general role for ApoE in amyloid diseases as an amyloid catalyst or “pathological chaperone” (18). The gene discussed is APOE; the disease is Alzheimer disease.
