Studies in hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) patients have shown that despite the iron overloading in parenchymal organs, dietary iron absorption is relatively high, and that DMT1 and iron regulated-transporter-1 (Ireg1, also known as ferroportin or metal transporter protein-1, MTP1) in the intestines are expressed in inappropriately high levels with respect to body iron status [124,125].
