The samples were examined for ICD relevant biomarkers as follows: the alarmin high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), which is mandatory for efficient processing and cross-presentation of antigens from dying tumor cells [27,28,29]; and the phosphorylated form of the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2α (p-eIF2α), which triggers calreticulin translocation to the cell surface of dying cells, where it serves as an engulfment signal for DCs [12,30,31,32].
