In the heart, modifications in oxPPP flux have been implicated in the maintenance of the redox balance: Following pressure overload as well as myocardial infarction, mice exhibited increased activity of glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase (G6PDH), the first and rate-limiting enzyme of the oxPPP, indicative of an increased oxPPP flux. This evidence concerns the gene H6PD and myocardial infarction.
