Additional studies further proved the pivotal role that IL-6 plays in the aggressiveness of breast cancer by stimulating a stem-like phenotype in MCF-7 mammospheres, characteristic of basal-like breast carcinoma, and IL-1β-dependent expression of IL-6, which increased stemness, invasiveness, and survival in MCF-7 cells [151,152]. The gene discussed is IL6; the disease is breast carcinoma.
