Christ and colleagues showed that feeding the western diet to Ldlr−/− mice (a mouse model that develops atherosclerotic lesions and hypercholesterolemia) induces systemic inflammation, the proliferation of myeloid precursors, and their reprogramming, while Ldlr−/− Nlrp3−/− mice do not, pointing towards the importance of the NLRP3 inflammasome. This evidence concerns the gene NLRP3 and Hypercholesterolemia.
