In a study by Funatsu et al., hypertension, aqueous levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and aqueous levels of IL-6 were associated with the exacerbation of macular oedema [22], and the levels of IL-6 correlated with the severity of DR and CFT, as measured using OCT [23,24,25]. This evidence concerns the gene VEGFA and macular retinal edema.
