In AD, deposits of amyloid-β (Aβ) proteins and hyper-phosphorylated tau protein aggregates known as neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) are thought to act as “seeds” that undergo nucleated polymerization leading to formation of pathogenic aggregates in brains of Alzheimer patients (Nizynski et al., 2017; Sarnataro, 2018). The gene discussed is MAPT; the disease is Alzheimer disease.
