Troponin has three (3) subunits; Troponin I, Troponin T and Troponin C. Cardiac troponin T (cTnT) and troponin I (cTnI) are cardiac regulatory proteins that control the calcium mediated interaction between actin and myosin, while cTnC is a highly conserved Ca2+ binding subunit.4 The measurement of serum cTnI and cTnT has been noted to be superior in terms of sensitivity and secificity to cardiac muscle enzyme measurements in the identification of cardiac muscle damage5 hence the preference of Cardiac troponins in the diagnostic criteria for MI.
