“Recurrence” or “relapse” was reported in five studies[2,6,10,14,18] and rates ranged from 0% among patients treated with medical management or medical management followed by surgery[14] to 50% in patients receiving anti-TNF treatment.[10] Among the three studies reporting occurrence of abdominal abscess,[6,10,19] the proportion of patients experiencing this complication ranged from 4.1% in patients undergoing bowel resection for ECF[19] to 62.5% in patients undergoing resection or wedge resection.[6].
