MPO and Multiple Organ Failure: DNA, histone, neutrophil elastase (NE), myeloperoxidase (MPO) and cathepsin G released during NETosis have cytotoxic effects on endothelial cells and pulmonary epithelial cells, which can not only enhance the coagulation of tissue factor and coagulation factor XII, lead to intravascular thrombosis and cause multiple organ failure (Massberg et al., 2010; Gould et al., 2014), but also further promote neutrophil recruitment.
