Studies have found that Kir6.1 (one of the ATP-sensitive potassium (K-ATP) channel subunits) deletion inhibits astrocyte phagocytosis by inducing mitochondrial dysfunction and mitochondrial ROS production, which contribute to the excessive activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome and the production of proinflammatory factors, thereby inducing the occurrence of PD. Here, KCNJ8 is linked to Parkinson disease.
