Studies in murine models of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) showed that the presence of MAIT cells is associated with higher levels of autoantibodies and that the impact of MAIT cells is dependent on CD40-CD40L interaction suggesting a role for MAIT cells in providing help to B cells in this setting [84]. The gene discussed is CD40LG; the disease is systemic lupus erythematosus.
