In early 2021, JEV was diagnosed in a patient in the Tiwi Islands of the Northern Territory and shown to be due to the rare genotype of JEV, GIV [36]; in early 2022, JEV GIV was identified as the cause of congenital malformations and fetal death in piggeries in south-eastern Australia, with a number of human cases also reported [37,38,39].
