In a standardised preclinical setting, it was found that male rats fed with high-carbohydrate high-fat diet for 20 weeks displayed MetS [16,17,18] with elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) and fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23), but lowered phosphate-regulating gene with homologies to endopeptidases on the X chromosome (PHEX) [19,20]. The gene discussed is PTH; the disease is metabolic syndrome.
