Direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC) (Table 1), drugs directly inhibiting thrombin (dabigatran) or activated coagulation factor X (apixaban, edoxaban and rivaroxaban), are currently the drugs of choice for the pharmacological prevention of stroke or systemic embolism [1] in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF).
