To treat advanced AMD, several gene therapeutics are currently in clinical trials: GT005 [13] is used for the treatment of GA and is a recombinant adeno-associated viral (AAV) vector that encodes human complement factor I (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT03846193, NCT04437368, and NCT04566445); AAVCAGsCD59 is tested for both dry and wet AMD (NCT03144999 and NCT03585556) and expresses a soluble form of the membrane regulatory protein CD59. Here, CFI is linked to age-related macular degeneration.
