LDLR/ApoE double knockout rabbit models have been developed, by CRISPR/Cas9 technology, and they showed increased total cholesterol levels up to 10-fold as compared to wild-type rabbits and exhibit hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis in the aorta as well as the coronary arteries at the age of 12 weeks when fed a regular chow diet [58]. This evidence concerns the gene LDLR and hyperlipidemia.
