Several mechanisms may be associated with the occurrence of lymphopenia in SARS-CoV-2 infection, such as attraction of T and NK cells to sites of infection and sequestration of lymphocytes in target organs [27,28,29]; SARS-CoV-2 infection in human T cells [30]; and higher expression of p53 in PBMCs of patients with COVID-19, which leads to apoptosis [31]; among others. The gene discussed is TP53; the disease is COVID-19.
