INS and Hyperkalemia: This finding suggests that the previously recommended ratio of 2 g dextrose for every 1 unit of insulin administered may not be sufficient to avoid hypoglycemia in all cats.10,11 To our knowledge the primary source of the recommendation for dextrose:insulin ratio of 2 g dextrose to 1 unit insulin is an abstract that appears not to have made it to full peer-reviewed publication.12 In the most current human literature, there is evidence that a higher dextrose to insulin ratio of 3 –5 g/u should be used to treat all-cause acute hyperkalemia.13
