Given the variability of recommendations for dextrose dosing for this indication, and the fact our population contained cats that developed hypoglycemia despite receiving ⩾2 g dextrose/unit insulin, it seems reasonable to recommend a minimum of 3 g dextrose per unit insulin (0.3 g/kg when administering a dose of 0.1 u/kg regular insulin) in non-diabetic cats for treatment of hyperkalemia. The gene discussed is INS; the disease is Hypoglycemia.
