VWF and systemic inflammatory response syndrome: Mounting evidence suggests that trauma-induced complement activation may provoke endotheliopathy that leads to SIRS, vascular hyperpermeability, MOF, and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura via the “two-path unifying theory”: (1) C5b-9-endotheliopathy-cytokine storm and (2) C5b-9-endotheliopathy-platelet activation/endothelial exocytosis of unusually large von Willebrand factor (49, 50).
