Rizzi et al. (2018) also showed that NGF acts on mouse microglia by polarizing cells toward a neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory phenotype. The above evidence from animal models shows that microglia represent a target cell of NGF in the brain. Thus, the relationship existing between hNGFp and inflammatory chemokines and cytokines at microglial level can be foreseen as a novel therapeutic target in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases (Rizzi et al., 2018). This evidence concerns the gene NGF and neurodegenerative disease.
