The chosen IL-1β inhibitor, canakinumab, had been used since its FDA approval in 2009 for the treatment of the rare inherited disorder cryopyrin-associated periodic syndromes (CAPS), in which IL-1β is over-secreted, as well as for the treatment of other inflammatory conditions such as gout and periodic fever syndromes. This evidence concerns the gene IL1B and cryopyrin-associated periodic syndrome.
