BACE1 and Alzheimer disease: BACE1 is therate-limiting enzyme responsible for Aβ production in the brain, and increased BACE1 expression is thought to be a risk factor forsporadic AD.22 Many studies aimed at testingthe effect of small molecule inhibitors on reducing BACE1 activityare ongoing and may show promising results in view of the discoveryof a disease-modulating treatment;23 ourattempt to identify miRNA-29a as a possible AD biomarker is thereforewell supported by the current efforts of AD research.
