Given that this CD163 + M1 population colocalizes with iron, extracellular lipids, apoptotic iron-laden-macrophage-derived CD36+ foam cells, and extracellular ceroid, our histological data supports the idea that iron-containing ceroid acts as a potent pro-inflammatory chemoattractant promoting a self-perpetuating and amplifying loop of macrophage ingress and expansion of death zone of macrophages infiltrating the chronic MI zone. The gene discussed is CD163; the disease is myocardial infarction.
