Overexpression of TLR2 and Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) in corneal and conjunctival epithelial cells was found in patients with clinical KC, subclinical KC, first-degree relatives (without abnormal clinical–topographic–aberrometric–tomographic parameters) of KC patients, and even patients with pellucid marginal degeneration (another sort of corneal ectasia) when compared to healthy control participants [17,27,28]. The gene discussed is TLR4; the disease is keratoconus.
