IL6 and acute respiratory distress syndrome: ROS plays an important role in the intracellular alterations produced by SARS-CoV-2, leading to the massive production of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines, such as TNFα, IL6, and IL8, referred to as “cytokine storm”, which is responsible for lung tissue damage and causes cell death [33], and for ARDS, which involves a systemic inflammatory response that has been attributed to the release of mediators triggering an attack by the immune system [34].
