Due to its important role, a decreased level of MMP-2 may take part in the development of myopia, namely, the improvement of posterior scleral thickness, increased glycosaminoglycan and collagen levels, the induction of the regularity of collagen fibrils, an increased diameter of collagen fibrils, and the stabilization of scleral biomechanical properties [27].
