FHIT and neoplasm: Although early in vitro studies showed that Fhit is an enzyme able to hydrolyse diadenosine triphosphates, which are produced in cells in response to stress [2], its activity as a tumor-suppressing protein—although frequently assessed both in experimental and human tumorigenesis [3,4]—remained obscure for a long time since no protein partners were proven for a long time after its discovery.
