Erythropoietin (EPO), a 34 kDa glycoprotein hormone and a member of the hematopoietic class I cytokine superfamily (Lacombe and Mayeux, 1999), is a growth hormone that stimulates neovascularization and has been used to treat several types of anemia (Hiram-Bab et al., 2015).
