Although our study does not address whether hereditary cancer genes such as BRCA2 or ATM increase lung cancer or sarcoma risk—or whether patients with these hereditary cancer risk genes developed these atypical tumors by chance and/or environmental features—it is clear that the presence of tumor hereditary cancer gene variants in atypical tumors is an opportunity to diagnose hereditary cancer. The gene discussed is ATM; the disease is lung carcinoma.
