This finding is important because macrophage-derived FABP4 and FABP5 were shown to promote a proinflammatory state in the vasculature during atherosclerosis development (Babaev et al., 2011; Furuhashi et al., 2007; Makowski et al., 2001), in keeping with the proinflammatory status of old SKM. Here, FABP4 is linked to atherosclerosis.
