GCG and type 1 diabetes mellitus: This may also be considered ‘maladaptive’ in type 1 diabetes, largely because the inability to switch off exogenous insulin that is being released continuously from a subcutaneous depot, and because of the hypoglycaemia‐specific defect in alpha cell‐derived glucagon release, means that hypoglycaemia is occurring in ‘unphysiological’ context and so can become quite profound (Figure 3).
