The “cytokine storm” (CS) is characterized in severe COVID-19 by systemic inflammation with increased ferritin, D-dimers, C-reactive protein (CRP), and cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFα), interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), and interleukin 18 (IL-18), that leads to multi-organ failure (3). The gene discussed is IFNG; the disease is Cowden syndrome 1.
