CCL2 and diabetic kidney disease: Some features of DKD, such as the high expression of intracellular adhesion molecule 1 and monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 by renal tubular cells, may increase the recruitment of macrophages (59, 60), which then respond to the locally high concentrations of glucose, AGEs, and oxidized low-density lipoprotein by secreting proinflammatory cytokines (61, 62).
