Notably, the mean density of CD8+ TILs in HNSCC with increased β-catenin activity was 168 cells/mm2 compared to a mean density of 293 cells/mm2 in nuclear β-catenin-negative cases (p = 0.01), and the cases with nuclear β-catenin expression had a higher proportion of type II tumor microenvironment (defined as immune ignorance) according to the classification reported by Teng et al.
