Aberrant hypermethylation of laminin genes has been reported to cause the development of glomerulosclerosis and tubulointerstitial fibrosis in older kidneys, while aberrant methylation of the rasal1 (Ras protein activator-like 1) gene induced the activation of the Ras–GTPase pathway in fibroblasts, leading to proliferation and fibrosis [72]. This evidence concerns the gene RASAL1 and glomerulosclerosis.
