The authors found that red blood cells precursors/progenitors [CD71+ Erythroid Cells (CECs)] co-expressing angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), a major host receptor for coronavirus, and the SARS-CoV-2 co-receptor (TMPRSS2) are enriched in the blood of COVID-19 patients and that they support viral replication. This evidence concerns the gene ACE2 and COVID-19.
