SLC7A11 and breast cancer: The NRF2 transcription factor is one of the main regulators of the genes involved in the antioxidant response, including xCT. In breast cancer cells, the NRF2-dependent transcription of xCT can be inhibited by a direct interaction of NRF2 with mutant P53 proteins (Lisek et al., 2018); as a consequence, breast tumor cells with a P53 mutant protein may present low levels of xCT expression, resulting in low GSH and high ROS levels (Liu et al., 2017).
