Since α-L-arabinofuranosidase activity of Erc1 could not be demonstrated and none of the two other U. maydis α-L-arabinofuranosidases could restore the Δerc1 mutant infection phenotype, we decided to test whether Erc1 might exhibit any other hydrolase activity that has been ascribed to some members of the GH51 family such as endoglucanase activity. This evidence concerns the gene ERC1 and infection.
