Serum albumin decreases in the event of an increase in systemic inflammation, followed by an increase in interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-cytokines, reduced liver function, nephrotic syndrome, and protein-losing enteropathy through the gastrointestinal system.2According to Abdullahi et al26and Raval et al13, there is a decrease in serum total protein and albumin in undernourished children, which is consistent with our findings of a decrease in total protein in the saliva.15, 27This suggests a reduction in total protein, which is also reflected in the composition of the saliva. The gene discussed is TNF; the disease is Protein-losing enteropathy.
