FGF21 has beensuggested to have multiple physiological functions, including protectingfrom cardiomyopathy by diminishing cardiac hypertrophy and oxidativestress in the heart.38 FGF21 is mainlyproduced by the liver and is released into the bloodstream.39 We report here that pectin supplementation increased Fgf21 expression in the liver in response to the HS dietbut only significantly in the pectin-supplemented animals. This evidence concerns the gene FGF21 and cardiac hypertrophy.
