Nevertheless, phagosomal membrane damage does not seems to be completely essential as in the first 2 – 3 hr post-infection, up to 34% of the phagosomes are not acidic (by flow cytometry; Figure 3E) and up to 55% of the phagosomes exhibit some alteration (by live microscopy; Figure 2B), yet only ~5% of cryptococcal-phagosomes stain with Gal-3 in that timeframe.
